Aska Kolo Ansambl - is a Serbian kolo
folkdance group based in Sacramento under the direction of kolo specialist, Marija Krapcevic and accompanied by Master Accordionist , Bogdan Mitic . It was formed to preserve and share the rich and diverse folk culture of original Yugoslavia through authentic folk dances and songs.
The group's name, “Aska” is from a Serbian folktale by Nobel Lauerate writer, Ivo Andric (Anh- dreech). In “Aska and Vuk”, a young lamb named Aska, saves her own life from a chasing wolf by mesmerizing him with her dazzling intricate dance steps.
Dressed in traditional costumes from various regions of Serbia and Bosna (Boh-snah), “Aska” will show you why (according to an old Serbian proverb): “If you sing, you can think no bad thoughts” and (according to Aska's Director Marija) “If you dance kolo, you will live longer!”
Aska performs kolos and folksongs from the various regions of former Yugoslavia in authentic native costumes. After the performance, the group likes to invite the audience to participate in dancing with the group, by teaching a kolo to the audience. |
What makes this a lot of fun is that no matter what the ages are of the family members --- all (young and old) can join in and dance together!
